The Graduate Program in Computer Science of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) is one of the oldest and most well-established in the area of Computer Science in the country, and was evaluated by CAPES (the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education) at level 7, which is the highest. Created in 1974, initially with the master's degree and later the doctorate (1991), the program has always sought academic excellence both in human resources and in research, publishing the results in international vehicles with high visibility. From its inception until October 2016, the Program has trained 1,050 masters and 174 doctors.
The requirements for obtaining a Doctoral degree in Computer Science in the Program are as follows: obtaining 40 credits in courses, four credits of which from Teaching Internship activities; passing a first-stage qualification examination, consisting of tests of horizontal knowledge in different basic areas; passing a second stage qualification examination, consisting of the presentation of a doctoral research project to a committee; publication of articles in a congress of recognized quality, and submission of at least one article to a qualified journal; approval in the dissertation defense.
The requirements for the master's degree are as follows: obtaining 22 credits in courses, of which two credits from Teaching Internship activities; passing a foreign language examination; approval of thesis outline; and successful defense of thesis. Although publication of articles is not mandatory, several of our students complete their master's degree with at least one scientific article published in high-impact media.
